We'll be wrapping up the pre-season tonight at 7:30 PM in Miami. Maybe we can get to .500 to end it. In any case, it doesn't really matter if we win or lose, as long as Daunte continues to add onto his positive experiences. Although, it wouldn't hurt for the running game to get going a little bit.

Sports Illustrated's NFL preview is in and they've picked the Dolphins as the AFC Champion. They say the Dolphins will win the AFC East with an 11-5 record, beating the Patriots on a tie breaker. No first round bye, though. They'll beat the Ravens, the Steelers and the Colts to get to the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, they'll lose to the Panthers. Check out their Dolphins preview, as well.

Sun-Sentinel.com has an article on Wes Welker:

Diminutive Dolphins receiver Wes Welker, sporting a bandage on his chin from a shot he took from Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis as well as some nasty cuts on his right leg, drew some laughs recently when a reporter said that he looked like a football player.

"Do I? It's about time somebody said that," Welker said with a hint of sarcasm.

lol.

Dolphins cut 14 players; trim roster to 75:

... the 14 players he cut, including former University of Miami quarterback Brock Berlin. ...

Also waived were receivers Jamall Broussard, Frank Murphy and Jason Willis; guard Emmanuel Akah; defensive linemen Steve Fifita and Howard Green; linebackers Travis Harris and Sam McGrew; defensive backs Norman LeJeune, Siddeeq Shabazz and Art Thomas; kicker Ola Kimrin and punter Thomas Olmsted.

In addition, the Dolphins placed guard Seth McKinney (neck surgery) on injured reserve, so he is out for the season. Also, rookie receiver Eric Kimble (Achilles' tendon) was put on the physically unable to perform list.

Rookie defensive tackle Rod Wright (shoulder) was moved to the reserve/non-football injury list. Defensive tackle Manny Wright, who is on the exempt/left squad list while battling depression, doesn't count against the roster.

The Dolphins will need to trim the roster down by 16 before 4:00 PM today. Armando Salguero talks about likely cuts:

So who is in danger of being cut?

Kicker Ola Kimrin and punter Thomas Olmstead probably will be waived, joining a group of likely cuts that might include offensive lineman C.J. Brooks, linebacker Travis Harris, cornerback Art Thomas, receiver Jason Willis, defensive tackle Howard Green, linebacker Matt Sinclair, quarterback Brock Berlin, guard Emmanuel Akah and others.

From Sun-Sentinel.com:

As of Monday afternoon, the threat to South Florida from Tropical Storm Ernesto has not affected the scheduling of Thursday night's Dolphins-St. Louis preseason finale at Dolphin Stadium.

"At this point, we're planning to play the game," Dolphins President Bryan Wiedmeier said in a team-released statement.

If they get it off, that'll wrap up the preseason for Miami.

Saban wants Vick to train at QB:

"It was our purpose and goal when we brought him here to continue to try to develop him as a quarterback," Saban said after Sunday's practice. "It is hard for us to get the four quarterbacks that we have reps in practice.

"I think that is a long-term goal of ours, if we can keep him in this organization some kind of way, that we would want to see if we could develop him as a quarterback as well. I think the diversity that he has because he was a quarterback is something that can also be featured in the offense."

The eight-man practice squad is a possible destination for Vick, but that would allow other teams to claim him.

Nick Saban, when asked about how the Dolphins will handle the atmosphere at the opening game when the Steelers get their rings:

"None of that affects what we do. So why should we be focused on it?" Saban said. "That is another one of those external things that people create that is supposed to make you do something.

"It doesn't have anything to do with what I do. I watch the film, we do what we do, we practice what we practice and we go play it. I don't get that, but I know I'm crazy. I know everybody thinks I'm crazy. I know the players think I'm crazy. I know you think I'm crazy. I know.

"So I just accept the fact that everybody thinks I'm crazy, but I don't get it."

Marino praises Culpepper: Proven guy you can count on:

"Daunte is an incredible quarterback," Marino said. "I don't think he has to worry about being compared to me or any other quarterback. He's a Pro Bowl player who still has an incredible future in front of him. I'm sure he's got a lot to prove and wants to get that Super Bowl win.

"So far, he's gotten off to a great start. I'm a Dolphins fan at heart and I want to see him do as well as possible."

Daunte looked good, going 14 for 19 with 140 yards passing and no picks along with 11 rushing yards on 2 attempts. However, he failed to lead the Dolphins to a touch down. The closest they got was 4th and goal at the 1, where Ronnie Brown was stuffed. They did manage 1 field goal, though. A 23 yarder from Mare. Mare missed from 55 in the 4th quarter.

Our 1 and only TD didn't come until the third quarter as Joey Harrington on an 11 play, 76 yard scoring drive which ended in a 6 yard TD pass to Chris Chambers, who led all receivers with 67 yards on 7 catches. Harrington was 7 for 14 with 66 yards. Cleo Lemon was 7 of 10 for 46 yards. Ronnie Brown attempted and completed a 22 yard pass of his own, as well. Lemon scrambled for 13 yards on 2 carries (all of those 13 came in a single carry). 3 games in, the Dolphins have yet to throw a pick.

Ronnie Brown was held to just 27 yards on 13 carries while Travis Minor made 23 on 4. McMichael (35 yards), Booker (34 yards) and Welker (21 yards) each had 3 catches. We managed to fumble 4 times (Cleo fumbled twice, Matt Sinclair and Welker had the others), but only lost 1 fumble thanks to recoveries by Cleo, Wade Smith and Marcus Vick. Welker's fumble was lost and resulted in a Carolina field goal.

Will Allen and Matt Roth led the team with 4 tackles each while Roth, Jason Taylor and Ben Ishola had 1 sack apiece. Although Ishola and Fred Evans each forced a fumble, neither was recovered by Miami. The Dolphins defense looked great, allowing just 4 field goals (on drives of 9, 47, 33 and 20 yards). The lone Carolina touchdown was on a 98 yard kickoff return by DeAngelo Williams.

Armando Salguero reports:

Miami officials began making calls to other teams Monday, with the Tennessee Titans among the teams they contacted. The Titans are struggling along the defensive line, with nearly half of their 14 linemen missing practice this week.

In what is bad news for the Dolphins, however, interest in Wright has been lukewarm at best. The Titans, unfazed by their need, told Miami they were not interested in Wright.

From Sun-Sentinel.com:

Dolphins coach Nick Saban said that his starters likely will still be on the field for the start of the third quarter of Thursday night's preseason game at Carolina.

"We'll probably play our starting team a little bit more," Saban said following Tuesday's practice. "At least a half, maybe a series in the second half. Not just the starting team, but more the rotation of how we would play a game. I think you've got to pick one of these [exhibition games] and say, 'Everybody's got to know the game isn't over at halftime.' "

According to MiamiHerald.com:

The Dolphins have been taking and making calls around the NFL, listening to overtures about players who might not be in the team's long-term plans.

The Titans are not known for making trades, particularly for an older player such as Zgonina. But their need is approaching desperation. ...

It is unclear who the Titans could give the Dolphins in return for a defensive lineman should the interest become more serious in the coming weeks.

Not sure how new it is, but I noticed that MiamiDolphins.com has a new design. It must be fairly new, though, because it's not fully integrated. Overall, it's nice, but the top navigation menu is a little annoying. For instance, highly "Contact" and try to go to "Whom to Contact." :)

13 points was enough for the Dolphins to top the Bucs as we evened our postseason record at 1-1. The lone Dolphins touchdown came on a 1 yard Sammy Morris run. Culpepper played into the second quarter, going 7 for 9 with 86 yards. Joey Harrington was 8 of 15 for 81 yards and Cleo Lemon was 3 for 7 with 29 yards. The Dolphins have yet to throw an interception in the preseason.

Meanwhile, we picked off the Bucs twice, including a Jack Hunt interception with 1:45 left in the game. Hunt also led the team with 5 tackles. Deke Cooper had the other pick with Derrick Pope forcing a fumble. Dan Wilkinson had 1.5 sacks. Keith Newman and Jeff Zgonina each collected 1 and David Bowers caught 0.5.

Ronnie Brown had 32 yards on 7 carries. Sammy Morris had 22 on 5 with the afforementioned TD. Jason Rader (3 catches, 37 yards) and Derek Hagan (3 catches, 20 yards) led the receivers. Olindo hit field goals from 41 and 52.

Sun-Sentinel.com has more on the game:

Untouched in his brief preseason debut against Jacksonville last weekend, it didn't take long for Tampa Bay's vaunted defense to knock Culpepper around. On his second series, Culpepper fumbled when stripped by blitzing middle linebacker Barrett Ruud. Running back Ronnie Brown recovered, but Culpepper was driven to the ground on the next play when sacked by defensive tackle Anthony McFarland.

Ruud, who started in place of Shelton Quarles, forced Culpepper into an intentional grounding penalty on the Dolphins' next possession. After landing on his knees, Culpepper quickly erased any concerns about his health by bouncing to his feet to argue with referee Bill Vinovich about the call.

"Everybody was kind of waiting to see what would happen, what would be my reaction," Culpepper said. "I think I handled it pretty well."

From MiamiHerald.com:

Quarterback Daunte Culpepper is expected to play longer in Saturday's Dolphins preseason game at Tampa Bay than he did last week, and defensive end Jason Taylor should see his first action of the preseason. ...

''We play the guys a certain amount of plays in the first game, and we usually build on that,'' Saban said. ``And we will build on that [against Tampa Bay], to some degree. Starters will play a little bit longer.
