Mike Shula has been hired by the Jaguars to be their Quarterbacks Coach. Meanwhile, a report says that the Cowboys have snatched our Quarterbacks Coach Jason Garrett away.
01/24: Coaching Staff Notes
Posted by: Patrick
Just to summarize a bunch of articles on our coaching staff:
First, some definites, some of which were reported thanks to "sources": Brett Maxie has been hired as our Safeties Coach. Terry Robiskie has been hired as our Wide Receivers Coach. Charlie Baggett, formerly the Wide Receivers Coach, has been fired. The titles of Keith Armstrong and Dom Capers have been changed. Keith Armstrong, formerly Special Teams Coach, is now Special Teams Coordinator. Dom Capers, formerly an Assistant to the Head Coach, is now our Defensive Coordinator. Mike Mularkey will be remaining on staff, but his role is yet to be defined - he could become the new Tight Ends Coach. Cam Cameron will be calling plays. Quarterbacks Coach Jason Garrett has been retained. Strength and Conditioning Coach Bert Hill has been fired. Running Backs Coach Bobby Williams has been retained. Secondary Coach Mel Phillips will be retained. And some potentials: according to a source, the Dolphins have received permission to interview Bengals Quarterbacks Coach Ken Zampese for our Offensive Coordinator job. We're still talking to Mike Shula about joining the staff in some capacity. According to a report, we have expressed some interest in former Broncos Linebackers Coach Kirk Doll (although that might change since we have a Wide Receivers Coach now, if that makes sense).

From Sun-Sentinel.com: The Dolphins have granted General Manager Randy Mueller permission to interview for that same position with the Tennessee Titans, the Tennessean reported today.
01/19: Dolphins Hire Cameron
Posted by: Patrick
We've got a head coach. From MiamiHerald.com: San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron has been chosen as the next head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
As a 16-day, coast-to-coast search for former coach Nick Saban's replacement came to its end today, Dolphins officials concluded that Cameron indeed was their man. A news conference was called for 7 tonight. 01/18: Decision Soon?
Posted by: Patrick
The decision could come soon.

From MiamiHerald.com:
Capers said Wednesday he has not yet agreed to a contract that would make him the NFL's highest-paid assistant. The Dolphins extended the deal to Capers last week, but he has decided to wait until the team makes its decision on the next coach.
''I certainly appreciate Wayne making the commitment,'' said Capers, reached late Wednesday. ``I enjoyed the year here.''

From Sun-Sentinel.com: ... Mike Shula, who interviewed last weekend for the job, also is expected to land a prominent offensive staff position if the Dolphins hire Cameron or Gailey, the sources said.
Shula's hiring could affect the job status of offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey, whose unit finished ranked a disappointing 20th in the NFL last season. 01/18: Down to Cameron and Gailey?
Posted by: Patrick
From Sun-Sentinel.com: The process to fill the Dolphins' head coaching vacancy is believed down to a two-man race between Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey and San Diego offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.
Cameron arrived in South Florida tonight for a second meeting with Dolphins officials that was expected to continue Thursday morning. Cameron was cleared to interview after San Diego lost to New England in last Sunday's AFC divisional playoff game. 01/18: Report:

From the Chicago Tribune: Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner is still among the finalists for the Miami Dolphins' head-coaching vacancy created when Nick Saban left to take over at Alabama, sources said Wednesday. Via Alex Marvez. 01/18: Separation of Power?
Posted by: Patrick
From Dave Hyde: This other, bigger decision went so subtly under the radar in all the fog and noise about the next coach that you may not have noticed. But there was Randy Mueller second-interviewing all the coaching candidates in the manner of someone who will work closely with the winner.
There was Mueller organizing the upcoming Senior Bowl scouting trip in the manner of someone who will run the draft. There, too, was Mueller being talked up by team President Bryan Wiedmeier as being "critical to this thing" and "someone we trust." None of this would be done if Mueller hadn't been handed the keys to the personnel side of the franchise. And he has been, according to sources. 01/18: College Teams After Garrett
Posted by: Patrick
From Sun-Sentinel.com:
Although the Dolphins aren't allowing their assistant coaches to interview for other NFL assistant jobs, quarterbacks coach Jason Garrett seems to be in demand at several universities.
Garrett reportedly turned down Alabama coach Nick Saban for the offensive coordinator job. He has been linked to a similar role at LSU, and according to a report in the Times Record (Ark.), Garrett is being considered for the same position at Arkansas.

Marty Schottenheimer is staying in San Diego.
01/17: Light Posting
Posted by: Patrick
From January 18 through February 3, posting here at PhinsBlog.com will be pretty light as I have some things coming up that will pull me away from the site. But, I will be around and should be able to post some, as well.

From PalmBeachPost.com:
Dom Capers, who has agreed to a three-year contract extension as the team's defensive coordinator, also remains in the mix for the top job, Wiedmeier said. ...
Team President Bryan Wiedmeier said the Dolphins have been in touch with the agent for San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. He will likely be brought in for a second interview this week.
Posted by: Patrick
From MiamiHerald.com: The idea of bringing Shula back to the franchise has been kept under wraps because the team wanted to gauge if he was indeed a legitimate candidate for the job. Having had two interviews, he apparently is.
01/16: Mora and Gailey
Posted by: Patrick
It looks like one of Jim Mora and Chan Gailey is going to be the next Head Coach of the Dolphins, barring any sudden changes (or Cam Cameron). Gailey seems like he has a little edge, in part because Dan Marino and Don Shula both seem to prefer him. "I don't know anything about Jim Mora," Shula said from Houston where he's coaching the East squad in the East-West Shrine (college) All-Star game. "Chan is a fine football coach. The only thing you could go by is his record. You base your decision on that and everybody knows him in the Dolphins organization. ...
"You want to get points because the team has a good defense ... the last 3-4 years," Marino told 790 The Ticket on Monday. "If you're Wayne or Bryan Wiedmeier you would think about getting an offensive-minded guy. "[Gailey] did a good job with limited talent [here] ... and has been a head coach before and I think he's going to be highly considered." 01/16: Schottenheimer Out
Posted by: Patrick
Just updating a previous story, from Sun-Sentinel.com:
"I have withdrawn my name from consideration for the Miami Dolphins' head coaching vacancy,'' Schottenheimer said in a team-released statement. "I want to thank Mr. Wayne Huizenga and the Dolphins' organization for expressing an interest. I am committed to the New York Jets and also want to thank Mr. Woody Johnson, Mike Tannenbaum and Eric Mangini for allowing me the opportunity to go through this process.'
