From Alex Marvez:

The Dolphins are discussing a free-agent contract with Denver guard Cooper Carlise, the Denver Post reported today. An eight-year NFL veteran from the University of Florida, Carlisle started for the Broncos the past two seasons. ...

The Dolphins have turned to the United Indoor Football League for a potential signing at wide receiver. The Bloomington Extreme's Web site said Glenn Johnson will try out for the Dolphins on April 4. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Johnson played under Dolphins coach Cam Cameron at Indiana University.

From PalmBeachPost.com:

Huizenga said he plans to address one of the sticking points this off-season by giving first-round draft picks an ultimatum to either sign with the team without a protracted delay or sit out the season. ...

"We're willing to write the check but they have to get in here and that's all there is to it," Huizenga said. "We're going to be one of the teams that kind of sets the tone. If you don't report, you're sitting out, baby. We're not playing you."

From Sun-Sentinel.com:

Jones told police that Porter approached him "to fight because they argue on the football field." As a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers for the past eight seasons, Porter has played against Jones 11 times since the latter was drafted in 2002. ...

"It was a cowardly assault by a coward," Jones told the Bengals' Web site Tuesday.

ESPN.com reports that David Carr has been released by the Texans.

The Houston Texans waived quarterback David Carr, the first draft pick in franchise history five years ago, and running back Domanick Williams.

The Texans never have had a winning record, and Carr often was the scapegoat. He completed 60 percent of his passes, but also threw 65 interceptions and was sacked 249 times in five seasons.

From Sun-Sentinel.com:

"Trent would like to be there," agent Jim Steiner said. "He has a relationship with [Dolphins coach] Cam Cameron that goes back 10 years ago when both were with the Washington Redskins together. It's an offense he's familiar with and there would be an excellent working relationship. ...

"It's not a salary thing or a contract thing," Steiner said when asked why a deal between the Dolphins and Chiefs hasn't already gotten struck. "It is a total non-issue at this point. The issue is the deal has to be made between the two clubs."

From MiamiHerald.com:

The club's brain trust spent part of Thursday speaking with the Houston Texans about quarterback David Carr and investigating all aspects of a possible trade for the former first overall pick in the 2002 draft.

Carr ending up in Miami is not a certainty. But it is a possibility that speaks to Miami's uncertain quarterback situation.

From Jeff Darlington:

Porter and Jones were playing blackjack at the same table in the Palms Casino when the heated argument broke out, spokesperson Jose Montoya said. Hotel security escorted the pair of NFL players to the valet area, where the fight erupted.

''Joey Porter struck Levi Jones in the left eye, causing a small laceration,'' Montoya said. ``Our officers arrived and issued a citation to Joey Porter and took a police report for misdemeanor battery.''

ESPN.com reports that the deadline for Dan Wilkinson to report has been extended indefinitely.

The clubs could probably extend the deadline, if they so desired, right up to the draft. At that point, given that the sixth-round choice involved in the deal is in this year's lottery, the trade might have to be voided, assuming Wilkinson still had not surfaced.

Armando Salguero reports that quarterbacks JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn are on the list of players that the Dolphins are interested in talking to. He says:

The reason the Dolphins want to talk to both players could be telling: They could be considering a scenario where they trade up to the No. 2 overall pick, where Detroit is listening to offers. ...

Keven Lerner mentions a "new tactic" to expert from the Dolphins: locking up good, young players with contract extensions, even though they will be paying more than usual for a second or third year player. He cites Channing Crowder, Vernon Carey, Rex Hadnot and Matt Roth as players that could be locked up this offseason.

Updating a previous story, from Jeff Darlington:

After questions were raised Tuesday regarding the trade between the Dolphins and the Patriots for wide receiver Wes Welker, several parties clarified that no grievances have been filed and no rules were breached. ...

... Carl Francis, NFLPA's director of communications, clarified Tuesday that his group was never worried about how the deal went down. Instead, the group was seeking the details of the deal -- not because there was any question about whether the CBA had been breached and not because Welker or his agent were unhappy.

From Sun-Sentinel.com:

The NFL Players Association is concerned that the Patriots and Dolphins violated the Collective Bargaining Agreement while putting together the recent trade of receiver Wes Welker and has asked the NFL Management Council for an explanation, according to a source.

"They may have violated the CBA rule that says one club can't offer the player's former team anything that would [sway] that team from matching their offer," the source said. "Anti-collusion [rule], that's another thing that may come into play."

Harvey Fialkov mentions that the Dolphins have expressed interest in free agent guard Matt Lehr and that they are talking about a Mare trade with the Browns, Falcons, Giants and Saints.

Joey Porter has passed his physical and is officially a member of the Dolphins.

Meanwhile, the Patriots are taking every wide receiver on the market. First, Wes Welker, then Donte' Stallworth and, now, Kelley Washington.

From Harvey Fialkov:

Schlesinger (35 in June) will take over for Darian Barnes, who signed with the Jets earlier this week. At 6 feet, 247 pounds, Schlesinger is predominantly a blocking fullback who should make life easier for starting running back Ronnie Brown. He has played all 13 years of his career with the Lions and has missed just 11 games. ESPN.com reports that the deal is worth $2 million.

Alan Tays has a write up on Joey Porter's hometown.

Porter hasn't forgotten his Bakersfield roots. He funds two $5,000 academic scholarships for Foothill graduates each year and provides free cleats for the varsity football team.

"When they had Joey Porter Day here, he must have signed autographs for six hours," Permenter says. "He does a lot of good things. Sometimes those don't make the papers as much as the other stuff does."

Porter also donates to the Claude W. Richardson Child Development Center in Bakersfield. One of his four children, daughter Jasmine, 7, is autistic and has attended the center.

Dave Hyde has a nice story on Olindo Mare where he makes the case that Feely isn't an upgrade over Mare. I would have to say that I agree with him.

Look at Mare's numbers. Look at Feely's. Let's look at the numbers from last year.

1-19 yards away? Neither attempted a field goal.
20-29? Mare was 10-10, Feely was 7-7.
30-39? Mare was 6-8 (.750), Feely was 10-11 (.909).
40-49? Mare was 9-12 (.750), Feely was 6-8 (.750).
50+? Mare was 1-6 (.166), Feely was 0-1 (.000).
Total? Mare was 26-36 (.722), Feely was 23-27 (.851).
Inside of 50? Mare was 25-30 (.833), Feely was 23-26 (.884).

Here are career percentages:
1-19? Mare is 1.000, Feely is 1.000.
20-29? Mare is .938, Feely is .921.
30-39? Mare is .848, Feely is .878.
40-49? Mare is .729, Feely is .679.
50+? Mare is .466, Feely is .375.

Now, let's consider kickoffs. Last season, Mare had 67 kickoffs. Feely had 78. Even so, Mare had 24 touchbacks while Feely had just 12. In his career, Mare has 159 touchbacks in 722 kickoffs. That's 1 touchback every .22 kickoffs. Feely, meanwhile, has 67 touchbacks in 485 kickoffs. That's 1 touchback every .13 kickoffs. In other words. Given 80 kickoffs, Mare averages 17 kickoffs. The number for Feely is 10.

Hyde also had this to say on money:

This shouldn't be about dollars, either. Mare is due to make $1.5 million in the final year of his contract next season (plus the $250,000 bonus the Dolphins already paid him). Feely got a $2.5 million bonus and a contract that totals a little more than $5 million. Break it down and the Dolphins might save a few pennies, but nothing to base a decision on.

All in all, I'd prefer that they stick with Mare.

Armando Salguero reports that we've re-signed Kevin Vickerson. He will be sent to NFL Europe.

We have started talking with Drew Rosenhaus, the agent for Donte' Stallworth and have made an offer.

We are trying to trade Olindo Mare. Apparently, they've gone ahead and paid him a $250,000 roster bonus, instead of cutting him, because they will be able to get something back for him.

Finally, Dan Wilkinson is considering retirement. If he does, we might have to give the Broncos back their 6th round pick.

Jay Feely wanted to stay with the Giants, but the Giants decided kicker wasn't a position on which they needed to spend extra money. So they chose not to make a competitive offer and Feely agreed to a three-year, $6-million deal with the Dolphins last night, with roughly $2.5 million guaranteed, according to a person with knowledge of the contract details.
