From Sun-Sentinel.com:

Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine for misdemeanor battery in connection with his fight with Cincinnati Bengals tackle Levi Jones at a Las Vegas casino last March, according to a court information officer.

Attorney Karen Winckler entered a no contest plea on Porter's behalf at Wednesday's hearing, and Judge William Jansen of the Las Vegas Township Justice Court handed down the fine after Porter was convicted, according to Michael Sommermeyer, a court information officer.

It remains to be seen, though, what sort of punishment the NFL may hand out.

From Sun-Sentinel.com:

The Dolphins are considering an offer to conduct joint preseason practices with the Titans in Nashville, Tenn., a source said. The sessions would likely take place the first weekend in August.

The Dolphins and Titans conducted joint practices in 2002 and 2003 in Nashville under then-coach Dave Wannstedt but Nick Saban opted against working with another team the last two preseasons. Some coaches embrace the idea of practicing with another club because it breaks the monotony of training camp and serves as another measuring stick for evaluating talent.

From MiamiHerald.com:

So how did Brown's 4.2 rushing average compare with great backs in Year 2? Tomlinson averaged 4.5, Edgerrin James 4.4 and Shaun Alexander 4.3. ''Brown's a good back, but I don't know if he'll be a great back,'' Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson said. ``Year 3 is a turning point.''

Another Hall of Fame back, Gale Sayers, predicted: ``Brown will last 10 years and maybe make the Pro Bowl one, two or three years. Can you say he will be a superstar? No. But he has good size, speed, quickness and he's strong.''

From Sun-Sentinel.com:

Cameron said the Dolphins finally reached veteran defensive lineman Dan Wilkinson by phone, but he's still uncertain whether he will retire.

"There's some things going on there that they have to work out," Cameron said of Wilkinson, who voided a trade to the Broncos after he didn't report.

The Dolphins also signed their two remaining seventh-round picks, punter Brandon Fields and linebacker Abraham Wright, to four-year deals.

From Barry Jackson:

The Dolphins have shown no interest in free agent Keyshawn Johnson -- whose receptions and yards would have led them last season -- for the same reason they're willing to deal Marty Booker: Neither has the exceptional speed they covet. . . . Booker said he has ''no idea'' if he's in Miami's plans. ``I don't want to ask if I have a job. They want to address speed. But I'm not this old guy that can't run. I've proven I can get behind defenses and make plays.''

From ESPN.com:

"I will not allow our fans to be let down by people that are not on our roster -- not again,'' Cameron said. "It's my responsibility not to let that happen. We have the greatest fans in the game, and we've got men on our team that we're going to focus on.'' ...

"The easiest predictor of future behavior is previous behavior,'' Cameron said. "Could I have made that statement 15 years ago? Absolutely not. I was trying to save every guy in the game.

"Ultimately it comes down to the team. You want to be as fair as you can be, but no individual comes above the team.''

He didn't out and out say "Ricky has no place here", but... for all intensive purposes, he painted the picture, I'd say.

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist visited the Dolphins yesterday and the Dolphins wanted to give him a jersey as a momento from his visit. Crist played QB in high school and apparently wanted number 12 which is, of course, retired in honor of Bob Griese.

From Sun-Sentinel.com:

``I said, 'You know that's retired. You can't give that jersey number away,''' Dolphins coach Cam Cameron said Friday. ``I said, 'We better call Bob Griese.' Bob was in North Carolina, and I think got a kick out of that. Bob gave us permission to give out a retired number.''

From Edgar Thompson:

On Friday, Culpepper worked on handing off, rolling out and throwing passes to receivers, with no defenders present. He did not handle snaps when the offense ran plays against the defense, even though neither is in full equipment.

One thing is clear: Culpepper’s arm looks fine. He moves a bit gingerly, but once his feet are set he delivers the ball with tremendous velocity and good accuracy.

Greg Cote caught up with former Dolphins running back Sammie Smith.

Smith remarried three years ago. The daughter in the stands that day? She is almost 20 now, headed to nursing school.

A 3-month-old baby girl is keeping Smith busy these days, along with a 7-year-old boy his wife brought to the marriage.

Smith owned a courier business but lately has delved into real estate, buying and selling foreclosure homes and vacant land that he has subdivided into lots. On Wednesday, he turned 40. At last, things are good.

From Adam Schefter:

... The Chiefs' organized team activities will kick off May 21, and Green is adamant that, unless he is traded to Miami before then, he will be attending.

The Chiefs do not want Green there as much as he doesn't want to be there, which could provide an impetus to consummate a trade by May 21.

Last year, the Titans were in a similar situation with veteran quarterback Steve McNair, and they wound up locking him out of the building, which created a unique and bizarre situation that no team, especially the Chiefs now, would want to repeat.

From Armando Salguero, who has some analysis:

"Due to the recent reports about me failing a drug test, I feel it is appropriate for me to issue this statement. Last month, following a psychological evaluation requested by the NFL, we -- the psychiatrist and I -- came to the realization that there were a few things I needed to iron out about myself in order to make my return to the NFL as successful as possible.

"I am an honest, God-fearing man who is intensely dedicated to being the best person I can be on and off the football field. There is no need to smear my name or to defame my character for the sake of news. When the time is right, God willing, I will be back on the field scoring touchdowns for whatever team is fortunate enough to believe in me.

"I appreciate all the support I have received from my fans and I assure all others that I am strong, clean, and happily preparing myself for a triumphant return to the NFL."
