All the points scored last night were scored in the 1st quarter on a 3 yard Pierre Thomas run with an Olindo Mare extra kick. That's it. The Dolphins were shut out, 7-0 and only had 121 yards of total offense.

John Beck was 8 of 15 for 63 yards and 2 interceptions. Gibran Hamdan was 3 of 7 for 31 yards and 2 interceptions. Patrick Cobbs led in both rushing (15 carries, 44 yards) and receiving (5 catches, 39 yards). Lorenzo Booker had 7 carries for 11 yards, Michael Malone had 2 catches for 27 yards and Kerry Reed had 2 catches for 20 yards.

Kelvin Smith (1 fumble recovery) led the defense with 11 tackles, followed by Courtney Bryan, Edmond Miles, Jason Allen (1 INT) and Rodrique Wright, who all had 8. The Saints had 326 yards of total offense.

Brandon Fields had 4 punts for an average of 44.3, including 1 inside the 20. His longest was 51. Jay Feely did not attempt a field goal. That's how bad it was. Not even a field goal attempt. Meanwhile, Mare attempted 3 and missed all of them, from 55, 50 and 33.

You can watch video "highlights" at NFL.com. Interestingly, Cameron did not coach in this one:

The Dolphins confirmed that head coach Cam Cameron will not be coaching tonight's final exhibition game against the New Orleans Saints so that his assistants could gain more experience running the team in case of an emergency.

Cameron will be on the sidelines but will not call plays either as the coach or offensive coordinator, his usual roles. Instead, Capers, the defensive coordinator, will assume all head coaching responsibilities. Capers was head coach of the Carolina Panthers from 1995-98 and the Houston Texans from 2001-05.

This quote is kind of odd:

"I was the head coach. I don't know where that came from," [Cameron] said following the Dolphins' 7-0 exhibition loss to the Saints. "We just delegated some responsibilities, but we didn't delegate that."

According to their RSS feed, the Dolphins official site had had an article called "GAME UPDATE: Beck To Start At QB, Capers To Serve As Head Coach" at this link. But, it is no longer accessible.

From the official site:

Cordova, 25, was a third-round draft choice of the Jaguars in 2004. After spending his first two NFL seasons (2004-05) on Jacksonville’s injured reserve list with a knee injury, he returned last year to play in 13 games, all in a reserve role. He recorded three tackles on defense and eight stops on special teams, where he also blocked a punt and recovered a blocked punt.

Adam Schefter:

As teams tweak rosters and debate deals, three wide receivers' names are popping up in potential trades that are more intriguing than they are likely.

Included in the list are primarily former first-round picks, primarily from the Sunshine State: Jacksonville's Reggie Williams, Tampa Bay's Michael Clayton and Miami's Chris Chambers.

Meanwhile, Armando Salguero reports that a "highly placed Dolphins source" has told him that Chambers is not on the block.

The Dolphins cut 9 guys. They need to cut 1 more by 4:00 PM today.

Kicker Matt Prater, punter Ryan Flinn, receiver David Sutton, tight end Jason Rader, running back Ray Perkins, defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson, cornerback Shirdonya Mitchell and safeties Christopher Vedder and Chris Harrell all were released. What that means is two position battles for sure have been decided – Jay Feely at kicker and rookie Brandon Fields at punter.

Jason Lieser has an interview with Olindo Mare on his departure from Miami.

Were you upset about leaving the Dolphins?

“At the time you’re obviously upset because they paid the roster bonus, so we thought we’d be there. I thanked Randy Mueller and Cam for trading me here. I might send them a Christmas present. Why wouldn’t any kicker want to come here? You know you’re going to playoffs, possibly the Super Bowl, you’ve got an unbelievable offense and you’re kicking in a dome.

“They have to do what they feel is best for the team and they signed Jay. I don’t know their reasons for getting rid of me. I kicked good for 10 years there. I was never told why I was released, but … it doesn’t really matter to me. They only thing they told me is sometimes change is good. There’s nothing they could have said after I got traded that would have made me feel better than coming here and having people treat me so well. They’ve welcomed me so much here. It’s been an easy transition for me. I was happy in Miami. I was born and raised there, but right now I would not want to be down there.”

Were you surprised?

“I wasn’t surprised that I went. I just was surprised to see Feely there. I’d never had somebody come in and take my job. I was little surprised Donnie Jones left. He was a Pro Bowl alternate the year before and he was young, strong. I think Donnie Jones is leading the league in punting in pre-season. I promise you, by words of his own mouth, Donnie is happy.”

Edgar Thompson reports that Joey Porter has returned to practice.

"It feels good for my first day out there trying to do some football work," said Porter, who signed a five-year deal during the off-season with $20 million guaranteed. "I'm ahead of the game plan. I like where I am right now and have enough time to get ready to where I want to be when opening day starts."

Barry Jackson has a summary of assorted TV anaylsts' expectations of the Dolphins this season. The most positive?

NBC/HBO/NFL Network's Cris Collinsworth: ``They're a .500-looking team, but would it shock me to see them in the playoffs? No, because they have some very good skill position players. Trent Green is as good as Tony Romo, and Romo played in the Pro Bowl.''

The Dolphins lost their first preseason game of the year last night, at the hands of the Bucs, 31-28. Watch video highlights.

The first drive was a disaster - quick and painful. After a 2 yard loss by Ronnie, Trent Green threw a pick to Cato June that he took 2 yards into the end zone (yes, 2 yards). Though the interception wasn't really Green's fault. Ronnie has to make the catch there, but, it slipped away and that was that.

Even so, the Dolphins got back on track and the first quarter ended with them leading, 14-7. Trent Green threw a 1 yard TD pass to David Martin and Jesse Chatman took in an 11 yard TD run. Green faked a pass (empty handed) while putting the ball behind his back for Chatman to take. He broke a tackle and carried a couple defenders into the end zone. To set this up, Matt Roth intercepted a pass on the line on the 2nd play of the Bucs drive after the Martin TD. With Jeff Garcia trying to throw out into the flat, he plucked the ball out of the air and took it 11 yards to the Tampa Bay 23.

In the second, the Bucs scored 10 unanswered points, allowing them to pull ahead, 17-14. The Dolphins took back the lead early in the 3rd, on a 51 yard TD pass to P.K. Sam from John Beck. Beck threaded the needle between 3 defenders (two of them ran into each other) and Sam ran about 25 yards after the catch for the score.

But, Tampa struck again at the start of the 4th to take the lead back once again. This came on a 6 yard TD pass to Earnest Graham from Bruce Gradkowski and gave them a 24-21 lead. Just 4 minutes later, the Dolphins would answer with a Beck (another good pass) to Hagan 31 yard TD reception. Dolphins 28, Bucs 24.

Unfortunately, that is not where it would end. With just under 5 minutes left, the Bucs would score last on a 1 yard Paris Warren TD catch that would put the score at it's final - 31-28.

Beck finished 11 of 22 for 162 yards and 2 TD (and a fumble that was recovered by Tala Esera), Lemon was 8 of 12 for 77 yards and Green was 7 of 11 for 42 yards, 1 INT and 1 TD. Ronnie had 18 yards on 6 carries, Ray Perkins had 17 yards on 4 carries, Cleo had a single run for 17 yards and Chatman had 4 carries on 9 yards (even with the 11 yard TD run, he had 3 other carries that netted -2 yards). Patrick Cobbs had a fumble.

P.K. Sam had 2 catches for 60 yards and a TD, Lorenzo Booker had 6 catches for 41 yards, Chris Chambers had 2 catches for 32 yards, Hagan had 1 catch for 31 yards and a TD, Ted Ginn had 3 catches for 29 yards, Courtney Anderson had 1 catch for 28 yards and David Martin had 1 catch for 1 yard and 1 TD.

Jay Feely missed his only field goal attempt, a 54 yarder at the end of the 2nd quarter. Brandon Fields had 2 punts, averaging 45.5 yards and Ryan Flinn had 1 punt for 44 yards. Ginn didn't contribute in the return game, with 2 punts being kicked out of bounds, 1 being downed by the Bucs, 1 being fair caught by Ginn and 1 being taken 16 yards by Lorenzo Booker. On kickoff returns, Booker had 3 for 64 yards, Ronnie had 2 for 53 and Cobbs had 1 for 24.

Defensively, Steve Fifita led the defense with 5 tackles, followed by Derrick Pope with 4 and Tuff Harris and Kelvin Smith with 3. Akbar Gbaja-Biamila had a sack (and 1 tackle) while Vonnie Holiday (1 assisted tackle) and Matt Roth (2 assisted tackles) split one.

The Dolphins next and final preseason game comes on August 30 at 8:00 PM in New Orleans.

A bit late reporting this, but I have been traveling. From Sun-Sentinel.com:

This will be the last season at the Orange Bowl for the Hurricanes, who will move in 2008 to Dolphin Stadium, where an ongoing $300 million renovation has added giant high-definition scoreboards and plush lounge areas, and where the university is expected to earn millions more in annual revenue.

From Jeff Darlington:

Cameron's decision drew immediate questions about why he would put Brown at such a risk of injury and not use Ginn, who apparently was drafted with the ninth-overall pick to return kicks.

But when the subject came up again after practice Saturday, Cameron attempted to clarify his plans. ''That statement only applied to that game,'' Cameron said.

From PalmBeachPost.com:

Ronnie Brown and Jesse Chatman likely will be Miami's kickoff returners, and not first-round draft pick Ted Ginn, Jr. ...

"That will probably be our return guys," Cameron said of Brown and Chatman. "We want to focus Ted on punt returns. That takes a lot of work and I'd like to see him get a lot of work on that."

League sources said the Broncos have spent the past two days phoning teams in an attempt to gauge interest. Among the clubs to whom the Broncos have spoken are Washington, Miami and New Orleans. Although Indianapolis is in need of a tackle, given the season-ending knee injury sustained last week by starter Anthony McFarland, the Colts have not demonstrated interest yet in acquiring Warren.
