09/17: Dolphins Lose Home Opener to Bills, 16-6
Posted by: Patrick
Well, folks, we're 0-2. J.P. Losman had just 83 yards passing. They had 13 more rushing yards than us. And we lost. Daunte was 23 of 32 for 250 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. Those numbers really don't sound that bad, do they? But, the fact is, they are misleading. Those yards came in the earlier parts of drives with the Dolphins showing little ability to finish off drives with any points - even field goals. The protection was, well, not great. Daunte was sacked 7 times and he fumbled twice (neither fumble was lost, though), one of them coming on a Gary Yepremianesque ball slip. For passing for 250 yards and rushing for 92, the offense just seemed kind of sluggish. It wasn't until 1:54 in the 4th quarter that we saw some real brillance when Daunte and Chambers connected on a 23 yard bullet touchdown pass. Well thrown with a terrific, terrific catch where Chambers dove to make the tough catch, but didn't even give the refs an opportunity to overturn the call because it was that clean. What took so long? This is what we need to do in the first quarter, send Chambers out and let Daunte hit him. Get it open early. Establish the run, I know... but, we've got a QB with an arm now. Airing it out can help the run, anyway. Ronnie Brown ran fairly well, although he only got 15 carries in all. They netted him 70 yards, for an average of 4.6. Lee Suggs ran for 12 yards on 3 carries. Chambers had only 4 catches for 55 yards. Ronnie had 6 for 52. Wes had 5 for 41. McMichael had 3 for 34. Booker had 3 for 33. Mare missed his only attempt, from 55 yards. Donnie Jones punted very well (edit: with the exception of a blocked punt), hitting 6 for an average of 47.2 with 1 in the 20. Vonnie Holiday led all defenders with 5 tackles. Yeremiah Bell and Kevin Carter each had a sack. We were penalized 12 times for 75 yards (50 yards of that coming on a pass interference call where Will Allen mugged Lee Evans, who had him beat in the end zone). Not a very fun game to watch (for Dolphins fans, anyway). We didn't score a single point until 1:51 left in the game and that was it. We played good defense, but our offense was ineffective too many times that it needed to be effective. Next week we'll be playing host to Tennessee at 1:00 PM on Sunday.
