06/06: Culpepper Says Dolphins are Looking to Trade Him

From Jason Cole:

"This morning I met with (general manager) Randy Mueller and (coach) Cam Cameron," Culpepper wrote in an email on Wednesday morning. "They finally notified me that they are going in a different direction at the QB position. They would like to trade me in order to 'get something for me.' However, it is my position that I have already been down that road and I am not interested in being traded. They have told me throughout the off-season that I am under contract to the Dolphins.

"Therefore, it will be up to them to either keep me under contract or release me. In the meantime I will continue to work out at the facility with the team and prepare myself for training camp, wherever it may be."

I'm really disappointed by this for three reasons. They are as follows:

1. What are we going to get for him? Not much. It's not like we're getting a first day pick here.

2. What is it going to cost us to keep him until we have to make cuts, rather than getting rid of him long before that? As far as I know, not very much.

3. This is our quarterback situation: Trent Green, Cleo Lemon, John Beck and Gibran Hamden. Green has been good in the past, but he will be 37 going into the season and he's coming off a concussion. I like Lemon, but... who knows. Beck could be good, but he's a rookie, so expectations have to be tempered. And Hamden.

For these reasons, I don't know why we don't just keep Daunte around and give him some time to win this job. We're rushing to release him for what? Trent Green? It's not like we have Dan Marino sitting here or something. I don't look at any of our QBs and say "oh yeah, that's our starter."
